Is there a market for concrete trees? Earl Senchuk (earlsenchuk.com) thinks there is and has perfected a technique that produces trees with not only concrete bark, but a well-considered system of branches (complete with foliage). He’s won the top decorative concrete award at the World of Concrete show in Las Vegas before, but for a flower water fountain design. Now he’s back with his tree offering — a technique he’s essentially giving away. “I’ve made a lot of trees at my home (Marquette, Mich., in the upper penninsula), but they’re too expensive to ship. I figured people within 300 miles of this place could make these trees and sell ‘em.” The process starts with a 1/2-inch cold-rolled steel rods; “that’s how you find your balance,” he says. Spoken like a true artist — someone who’s not looking to suffer for his art, just share it.
