I hate splinters-5 tips for removing them

Posted by Joe - 11 January 2012

I hate splinters.  I’m not trying to come across as a whiner, but they suck.  Here are a few tips to help get rid of them:

  • Prid Salve or other drawing salve – Designed to help bring the foreign object to the surface. Put it on before bed with a band-aid over it.
  • (White) Vinegar soak – Softens the skin, but can also soften wood splinters, making them harder to pull out.
  • Dull finger nail clippers – These work pretty well for grabbing stuff when tweezers just aren’t cutting it.
  • New X-Acto knife blade / holder – Grab a new hobby knife blade and make sure it’s properly sanitized.  These things can grab splinters with the sharp tip when pushed sideways.
  • Pocketweez – These things are splinters’ worst nightmare.  A tiny pair of folding tweezers that are made with some serious precision.

Any other tips that I’m missing?

    Hi Joe,

I use sharp fingernail clippers and literally take a chunk of the skin and splinter out. Fast, effective and way less picking involved.

I’ve used similar methods, but I don’t think I should be telling people to give it a try. I’ll let them figure that one out on their own.

Try the All American Favorite- Duct Tape. Form a loop around your fingers on the other hand with the sticky side out. Roll it over the area and most of the time, that gets it. Occasionally, I have to wipe it with or against the direction of insertion to get it to grab. It won’t get the big monsters, but it’s great for the little aggravations that come with luan plywood, mahogany, spruce and other boat building types of wood. It will also get the little filaments from fiberglass cloth, concrete reinforcing fibers, etc.
